Hong Kong’s complex, multicultural history—for almost 100 years a British territory, now a special autonomous region within China—helps color its big-city energy. One of the great metropolises of the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong—which lays claim to more skyscrapers than any other city—presents a jaw-dropping spectacle of a skyline to the visitor. From the head-spinning views available at the Peak to the waterfront Avenue of Stars (appropriate in one of the globe’s entertainment centers), the cityscape enfolds exciting “East-meets-West” culture, and a cuisine that Lonely Planet calls “heavenly.”
From a hotel in the heart of Hong Kong, you’ll enjoy guided cultural excursions that illustrate the region’s blend of traditional and modern lifestyles. On a half-day island tour taking in Victoria Peak and the fascinating Aberdeen fishing village, you’ll relish dim sum lunch and a boat ride on a flat-bottomed sampan. You’ll also partake in a full-day tour of Lantau Island, Hong Kong’s biggest: Take a cable car to Ngong Ping Village and visit the Big Buddha; have lunch at Ngong Ping Garden restaurant; and then journey to Tai O in the western part of Lantau for a kung fu experience and a cruise through the village.
