With a lush, green mountain backdrop and edged by the Mekong and Nam rivers, the city of Luang Prabang is a legendary destination in northern Laos. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has served as the capital of the historic Kingdom of a Million Elephants (Lane Xang) as well as the 20th-century Kingdom of Laos, and includes an amazing collection of traditional Lao homes and Buddhist temples intermixed with colonial-era buildings dating from its days as a French territory.
