Explore Myanmar’s Vibrant Culture

Journey by land and water around magical Myanmar and visit interesting temples, legendary palaces and ancient monasteries.

About Your Trip

Delve into Myanmar’s treasured antiquities and sacred sites on this DreamTrip to Mandalay, the last royal capital of Burma. Marvel at the teakwood masterpiece of the Shwenandaw Kyaung (Golden Teak Monastery) and the impressive shrines that make up the Kuthodaw Paya. After lunch, stop at the Mahamuni Temple, then visit the renowned Mandalay Palace, King Mindon’s iconic contribution to the royal city.

The next day, discover natural beauty and more of history’s wonders in Pyin Oo Lwin. Capture breathtaking photographs at the Pwe Kauk Waterfalls and explore the gilded Maha Ant Htoo Kan Thar Pagoda. Take in some of the region’s most stunning sights at the National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens, and enjoy a relaxing, traditional ride through town in a horse-drawn carriage.

Travel to Bagan, stopping at a plum-sugar workshop along the way. Enjoy an afternoon at your hotel before setting out on a serene sunset boat ride along the Irrawaddy River (also known as the Ayeyarwady River). Visit an ancient temple compound on the riverbank, basking in spectacular sunset views from within the sanctuary. Indulge in a delectable Myanmar-style dinner before heading back to Bagan and the comfort of your hotel.

A full-day sightseeing tour takes you to some of Bagan’s most popular ancient landmarks, including Shwezigon Paya, Htilominlo Temple, Ananda Temple and Dhammayangyi Temple. Visit the Bagan Archaeological Museum and Gawdawpalin Temple, the 2nd-tallest sanctuary in Bagan. The 6th day of your stay features a tour of the Nyaung Oo market, the ideal place to enjoy a genuine taste of local culture, cuisine and more. Vibrant flowers, fruits, vegetables, textiles and handicrafts greet your gaze in every direction, inviting you to learn more about daily life in Nyaung Oo.

What we love:
• Mahamuni Temple is an important pilgrimage site and home to a sacred, gold-leaf-covered Buddha statue.
• Visit a lacquerware workshop and enjoy your choice of Thai- or Myanmar-style cuisine for lunch after visiting the colorful Nyaung Oo market.
• The world’s biggest book — a collection of more than 700 inscribed, marble-stone slabs — is located at the Kuthodaw Paya, one of the morning stops on your full-day Mandalay sightseeing tour.

Destination

Considered the center of Burmese culture, Mandalay’s rich and exotic past attracts tourists from all over the world. With Buddhism as the predominant religion, the city is home to architecturally impressive monasteries and striking pagodas, including the Mahamuni Temple, a major pilgrimage site. Built in 1785, this temple houses a 12-ton (10,886-kilogram) Buddha covered in gold leaf. Reminders of Mandalay’s past as the last royal capital of Burma are seen throughout the city, including the royal palace. Built in 1861, this mighty fortress is located in the heart of the city, at the foot of Mandalay Hill, surrounded by a wide moat and high walls.

Along with diverse and unique landmarks, the city offers a variety of savory, authentic cuisine — from Shan and Thai to Chinese and Indian. Notable traditional Burmese dishes include mohinga, a popular rice noodle and fish soup, and htoe mont, a sticky, sweet rice cake.

Bagan is home to many of Myanmar’s most popular Buddhist sites, including more than 2,200 ancient temples, pagodas and stupas. While many visitors choose to rent a bicycle or hire a horse and cart to explore the area’s prehistorical wonders, locals recommend viewing the lay of the land from above in a hot air balloon. As one of the country’s most popular sightseeing destinations, the Bagan Archaeological Zone’s undeniable allure is often compared to that of Cambodia’s sacred Angkor Wat.
