Yangon Heritage & Scenic Beauty

Indulge in the history of ancient pagodas and palaces, take a hands-on cooking class, and admire the scenic beauty of Myanmar.

About Your Trip

Your DreamTrip to Southeast Asia takes you to Yangon, a city full of history and natural beauty. Start your full-day, guided tour at Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda, home of the revered 213-foot-long (65-meter-long) reclining Buddha statue. Visit the park at Kandawgyi Lake, and marvel at the replica of a Burmese royal barge at Karaweik Palace. Wander through the Bogyoke Aung San Market (also known as Scott Market), a busy bazaar with more than 2,000 shops. The next stop is Shwedagon Pagoda that was built more than 2,500 years ago and is completely covered in gold.

Continue your cultural discovery with a visit to the historic Sule Pagoda and a sightseeing stop at the colonial-era City Hall buildings. After a hands-on cooking class where you’ll learn about traditional dishes, explore the National Museum of Myanmar.

Before your incredible DreamTrip is over, journey to the ancient capital of Bago. See the stunning Shwenandaw Kyaung, the “Golden Teak Monastery” and the golden palace of Kanbawzathadi. Then, visit the Shwethalyaung pagoda and see another famed reclining Buddha statue — this one measuring 180 feet (55 meters) long and 52 feet (16 meters) high. On the way back to Yangon, stop at the Allied War Memorial Cemetery, which honors the British soldiers who died in battle in Burma during World War II.

What we love:
• To say the enormous Shwedagon Pagoda is magnificent is an understatement — the shrine is covered in over 59,000 pounds (26,000 kilograms) of gold leaf. The top of the stupa is encrusted with more than 4,000 diamonds.
• The city’s downtown is known for stunning colonial-era architecture that has been preserved by heritage groups — no skyscrapers here!
• Traditional dress in Yangon includes sarong-like garments for both men and women, and visitors to religious sites are encouraged to cover their shoulders and knees.

Destination

Yangon — called Rangoon during the British colonial era — was the longtime capital of Myanmar until the mid-2000s. It’s still the country’s largest city, not to mention Southwest Asia's major commercial hub. Thanks to milestone elections in 2012 that resulted in extensive political changes, the borders were opened to foreign travelers. A fascinating place to explore the many different faces of modern-day Myanmar, Yangon is home to an abundance of historical landmarks.

The city reflects its ethnic influences — British, Chinese and Indian among them — yet most of the population practices Buddhism, with pagodas and monasteries dotting the scenery. Take to the busy pedestrian street Anawrahta Road and you will notice wandering monks, rich colonial architecture, bustling markets and street-food vendors. Visitors to Yangon are delighted by the range of cuisine, from samosas and curry to tea-leaf salad and fish rice.
