See Sites of the Maltese Nobles

Tour Malta’s highlights, learn about military and holy monuments from the Middle Ages, and enjoy delicious regional cuisine.

About Your Trip

Delve into the history and culture of Malta during an illuminating journey to sites established by the country’s aristocrats. On your half-day tour, travel to the Maltese capital of Valletta and visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens near Castille Palace. Walk around the lush gardens and enjoy spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and beyond. See the terraced arches constructed by Italian knight Fra Flaminio Balbiani in the 1600s. At the Saluting Battery, witness the midday cannon salute. Stroll through the city center for a memorable photo stop. See the intricate architecture of St. John’s Co-Cathedral and Grand Master’s Palace before enjoying a delicious, 3-course lunch at a local restaurant.

Learn more about the country’s ancient history with a visit to “The Malta Experience” — an audio-visual show that brings the past to life. After this entertaining and educational show, carry on to the walled city of Mdina, where you can view Norman and Romanesque architecture, carefully preserved for more than 400 years. Return to the hotel for an afternoon at your leisure before a pleasant dinner.

What we love:
• Valletta was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980, due to its cultural value and history as a military outpost — the city features extensive examples of Renaissance architecture built by the Catholic knights of the Order of St. John.
• Maltese cuisine has been influenced by Italian and Spanish spices and features plenty of fresh seafood and herbs.
• The gun salutes at Valletta’s Saluting Battery are mostly ceremonial. However, they were used for military purposes in the late 1700s and during World War II.

Destination

Malta has an intricate history which includes long eras of conquest by the Greeks, Romans, French and British. As a result, the modern population is multicultural and Malta has one of the highest rates of multilingual natives in the European Union, with Maltese, English and Italian being the most commonly spoken.

In the past, the commercial fishing trade in the Mediterranean Sea dominated the Maltese economy. Today, foreign trade, manufacturing and tourism are the country’s largest industries. Malta is an archipelago containing 3 inhabited islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Visitors stay primarily in Malta and Gozo with frequent stops in Comino. Top destinations include the city of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the 19th-century Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish Church and the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni — a necropolis thought to be built around 3600 B.C.
