Cruise & Explore the Mekong in Luxury

Enjoy special hotel stays and sail to exciting ports in Vietnam and Cambodia on a deluxe river cruise aboard the Scenic Spirit.

About Your Trip

Price displayed above is per person based on double occupancy for the inside cabin and does include US$300 in government fees and taxes per person. Upgraded cabin categories are available at an additional cost. Click “Update Price” for final price per person, which includes government fees and taxes.

Begin your journey along the Mekong with a 2-night stay at a special hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. Explore the extensive underground tunnel system of Cu Chi — now a war memorial — and learn about its significance in the Vietnam War. On your 3rd day in in the city, discover Vietnam’s modern history through a visit to Reunification Palace (also called Independence Palace) and the War Remnants Museum. Then, transfer to My Tho, gateway to the Mekong Delta, and board the Scenic Spirit for a luxury river cruise to ports in Vietnam and Cambodia.

On your 1st full cruise day, take a sampan ride to visit the famous Cai Be floating market, local cottage industries and more. If you prefer, you can relish a later start to the day and savor morning tea, local music and cultural demonstrations at the French colonial house, Le Longanier. Later in the afternoon, explore historic Sa Dec, where you can interact with sellers in the town’s lively market and visit the home of Huynh Thuy Le, who inspired Marguerite Duras’ novel “L’Amant” (“The Lover”). Spend the remainder of the afternoon cruising to Tan Chau, where you’ll visit Evergreen Island and ride in a xe loi (a type of rickshaw) to Cao Dai Temple. Alternatively, you may choose from 2 options which cruise by speedboat to Chau Doc: Visit a family-operated fish farm and enjoy a walk through a Cham village, or visit Tra Su Bird Sanctuary.

Relax during a full day of cruising as you cross the border into Cambodia. Once the ship berths in Phnom Penh, board a tuk-tuk and transfer to Raffles Hotel Le Royal for a guided history tour, high tea and a refreshing cocktail. The next day, journey to the Killing Fields and tour Tuol Sleng. Or, take a guided tour of the local food market and learn to cook Khmer cuisine. Otherwise, by tuk-tuk, you can opt to explore the colonial buildings and modern architecture of Phnom Penh, as well as the Central Market, then stop for lunch at a nonprofit restaurant where street kids learn hospitality skills. Later in the afternoon, visit the National Museum and the Royal Palace with the famous Silver Pagoda within. At Kampong Tralach, experience an ox-cart ride from the ship through a local village and fields to reach Wat Kampong Tralach. Journey by coach to the ancient capital of Oudong and visit the impressive pagoda and monastery, and observe the lifestyle of local monks and nuns. If you wish, receive a blessing from a monk and learn how to pray in a Buddhist pagoda before offering a small donation.

Reboard the Scenic Spirit at Prek K’Dam and set sail. Downstream, wander through the silversmith village of Kho Chen, then approach Wat Hanchey, an ancient hilltop pagoda and present-day monastery. Continue to Kampong Cham and learn about the history and culture of the area with visits to Phnom Pros (Man Hill), Wat Nokor and ecotourism village Cheung Kok. Disembark for a 3-night stay in Siem Reap, which includes a trip to Phare, The Cambodian Circus, and a full-day tour of one of the world’s greatest temples — Angkor Wat. Start with a visit to 12th-century Angkor Thom and see the temples Bayon and Ta Prohm, all excellent examples of Khmer-inspired architecture.

What we love:
• The Mekong River goes by many names, including Cuu Long  by the Vietnamese, which means Nine Dragons, and Mae Nam Kon, which means Mother Water to the Thai.
• Wat Nokor is a colorful, modern Hinayana Buddhist pagoda built within a 12th-century Mahayana Buddhist shrine. The older shrine was originally constructed by Khmer King Jayavarman VII, a Buddhist ruler who built more than 100 hospitals and many monuments during his 30-year reign.
• The Mekong River supports around 1,100 species of fish, and is also home to more unique and rare animals, including Siamese crocodiles (in the wetlands region), and giant species of catfish, carp and ibis. Endangered tigers can also be found in the forests of the Mekong River valley.
• According to World Wildlife Federation (WWF), a 118-mile-long (190-kilometer-long) stretch of the Mekong that runs between Cambodia and Laos is home to fewer than 100 Irrawaddy dolphins. The WWF classifies these rare river dolphins as being vulnerable to extinction, and the Khmer and Lao cultures both regard the species as a sacred animal.
• Tra Su Bird Sanctuary in Tan Chau offers guided boat tours through acres of flooded forests that are inhabited by various types of stork, heron, waterhen, kingfisher and other species of birds.
