Discover Hokkaido's Diverse Landscapes

Visit a volcanic crater and soak in relaxing hot springs in the Japanese countryside, then see city highlights in Otaru.

About Your Trip

Admire amazing landscapes, natural beauty and rich Japanese culture on this fun and fascinating DreamTrip that traverses the island of Hokkaido. After spending the night in Sapporo, travel south toward Noboribetsu. Along the way, stop for a cheese-making experience. After lunch, explore the hilltop Noboribetsu Bear Park — home to more than 100 brown bears and a museum. At Jigokudani, known as Hell Valley, you’ll gaze in awe at the dramatic displays of sulfurous steam, geysers and bubbling streams. Then, take advantage of leisure time at the hotel to revive your muscles in the soothing hot springs.

From Noboribetsu, journey to Lake Toya and take in the landscape of lakes, islands and mountain ranges from the deck of the Silo Observatory. After spending time at Yoichi Distillery — makers of Nikka whisky — continue to the charming port city of Otaru, which is known for its superb arts and crafts. Visit the Otaru Taisho Glass Palace and view the exquisite beauty of its fragile exhibit pieces. At the Otaru Music Box Museum, housed in a magnificent century-old building, marvel at the impressive array and craftsmanship of the countless melody-makers on hand. Before transferring back to Sapporo, end your outing with a pleasant stroll along the Otaru Canal to see the artists selling their works.

What we love:
• Visitors to Noboribetsu Bear Park can view animals and their cubs from a protected enclosure.
• Your hotel in Noboribetsu offers hot-spring baths; besides being a place to socialize, they claim to offer various health benefits, including improved circulation, pain relief and mental relaxation.
• At the south end of Otaru Canal lies Sakaemachi Street Historic District, where old banks and trading houses have been converted into quaint boutiques and shops.

Destination

Sapporo may be internationally recognized for its beer, but the brewery is only the beginning of what this Hokkaido capital city has to offer. Gain a sky-high vantage point of the elongated Odori Park and neighboring mountains to the west with a ride to the top of Sapporo TV Tower. Sapporo Underground Pedestrian Space provides visitors with shops, restaurants and shelter from the elements directly underneath the city.

People travel from far and wide to Noboribetsu to soak in mineral-rich, sulfurous hot springs. Not far from the city is the main source of this water — Hell Valley. A must-see attraction, this volcanic crater offers pleasant hiking trails through the forest and an observation deck for great views of rising hot steam and spouting geysers. A popular souvenir from Noboribetsu is bath salts.
