The Treasures of Bangkok & Beyond

By land and water, see sacred temples, UNESCO-protected sites, vibrant markets and a majestic river around bustling Bangkok.

About Your Trip

Journey to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand established in the 15th century and now home to more than 14 million people. Begin your adventure at the sprawling pavilions, courtyards and gardens of the Grand Palace — official residence of the kings of Siam from 1782 to 1925 — where you’ll see the amazing Emerald Buddha statue. During your half-day tour, you’ll also visit Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, the nation’s oldest and largest temple. Then, savor Chinatown and its abundance of street-food vendors as well as more cultural highlights in Old City.

Travel north to the UNESCO-protected Historic City of Ayutthaya for its sightseeing journey into an ancient past. Explore the archaeological ruins of Bang Pa-In (Summer Palace), Wat Mahathat (“Monastery of the Great Relic”), the reclining Buddha at Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon (“Monastery of Auspicious Victory”) and Wat Phra Sri Sanphet — a holy site that was destroyed by fire long ago. To get back to Bangkok, you’ll board a boat and sail past ancient and modern landmarks on Chao Phraya River banks as you feast on a buffet lunch.

For your final excursion, you’ll board another boat — this time a traditional one — and coast along the canals to the famous Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. You’ll be entranced by the colorful fruit, vegetables and flowers being sold from the enormous cluster of boats. You can even try your hand at bartering with the vendors. Continue to Mae Klong Railway Market (known as the “risky market”) where vendors sell their wares from stalls right beside the railroad tracks while keeping an eye out for passing trains.

The following day gives you ample leisure time to explore the city at your own pace. Top attractions include Erawan Shrine, Lumpini Park and Asiatique The Riverfront, an open-air night market established in 1907, which features more than 1,000 venues for shopping and eating.

What we love:
• Bangkok’s Grand Palace offers a complex of buildings that once housed the kings of Siam and includes 18th-century architecture and 4 main courts, divided by several walls and gates.
• If you desire, you could visit the frequently photographed traditional floating markets with lively shopping venues full of boats selling clothing, souvenirs, flowers and more — you’ll feel like you just stepped into a postcard!
• Thailand is renowned for its impeccable beaches, thriving nightlife and delectable cuisine, which are all quintessential elements of the Bangkok experience.
