Immerse Yourself in the Culture of Kyoto

Don a kimono, marvel at natural wonders, soak in hot springs and more as you journey through Japan’s “City of Ten Thousand Shrines” — and beyond!

About Your Trip

On this fascinating DreamTrip, you’ll savor both the serenity and the bustling energy of Kyoto, one of Japan’s premier cultural centers. Your journey begins at Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine dedicated to the god of rice, and walk under any of the 10,000 colorful gates and around stone foxes. Then, it’s time for hands-on cultural immersion with the opportunity to don a kimono while learning about this elegant, traditional clothing. Don’t be shy — you can wear it as you walk around Higashiyama — a historic district — and Gion — an area acclaimed for its geishas. At a local restaurant, observe tradition up close, with a meal accompanied by a maiko, a geisha-like apprentice.

In the morning, you’ll visit the 400-year-old Nijo Castle — even though the main castle succumbed to fire, there’s plenty to see, including gardens, moats and fortification walls that surround the palace full of precious artwork. Continue to the ancient Zen temple of Kinkakuji (“Golden Pavilion”) and stroll around Arashiyama, home to a popular bamboo grove and photogenic bridge. That evening, you can take advantage of leisure time to revive your muscles in the soothing hot springs at Hotel & Resorts KYOTO-MIYAZU.

On your final tour, you'll travel to Amanohashidate and see the Chionji Temple and Amanohashidate Shrine. Then, board a sightseeing boat before getting treated to a ride on the cable car for scenic views.

What we love:
• Nijo Castle was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that lasted from 1603-1867. It’s part of the larger UNESCO World Heritage site known as Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
• Fushimi Inari Shrine was predominantly featured in the film “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
• Besides being a place to socialize, hot springs claim to offer various health benefits, including improved circulation, pain relief and mental relaxation.
• Kyoto has its own variation of the geisha culture. The regional equivalent of a geisha is known as a geiko, while an apprentice is called a maiko.

Destination

For more than 1,000 years, Kyoto served as Japan’s capital, and today remains one of the country’s spiritual and cultural centers. Famous for its ancient architecture — including many Buddhist and Shinto temples and shrines — the Honshu city itself has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spring blossoms and autumn foliage make for gorgeous seasonal scenery, while the city is a year-round showcase for exquisite Japanese cuisine.

Coastal Miyazu, in northern Kyoto Prefecture, is home to Amanohashidate, a 2-mile (3-kilometer) long sandbar covered in pine trees, making a natural bridge. It has been designated as one of the Three Views of Japan as well as one of the Places of Scenic Beauty of Japan. Various modes of transportation can be used to traverse this land bridge, including bicycle, motorboat and foot. To get the best views, tourists venture to the observation deck at Kasamatsu Park by cable car. Nearby mountainside Nariai-ji Temple, a popular stop for Buddhist pilgrimages, houses a centuries-old sculpture dedicated to the goddess of mercy.
