Cultural Landmarks in Charming Chiang Mai

Embrace ancient history with a visit to a sacred hilltop temple, then tour the old city by traditional tuk-tuk & see moats, an ancient gateway & more!

About Your Trip

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in northern Thailand with a fascinating half-day tour in Chiang Mai. You’ll start with a visit to the famous pilgrimage site Wat Phra That Doi Suthep — a Buddhist temple constructed on its namesake mountain in 1383 — and learn about the legend of the white elephant as you take in the wonderful view of Chiang Mai and its surroundings. Then, you’ll board a traditional tuk-tuk rickshaw for a tour of the old city and its fortification walls and moats constructed in the 18th century. Inside the walls, see the 14th-century Wat Phra Singh Buddhist temple and the entrance to the historical city known as Tha Pae Gate.

Enjoy the next day exploring Chiang Mai at your own pace. It has so much to offer — beautiful Buddhist temples nestled by forested mountains, exuberant night markets and rollicking bars. There’s no shortage of entertainment and sights to see for you to check out. Grab your camera and go!

What we love:
• While the vista at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep makes climbing the 309 steps from the temple’s base completely worthwhile, visitors can also take a tram to the top.
• In your leisure time, you can take a break from temples and head to the gorgeous riverside area, not far from your hotel. There, you’ll find a wide variety of wonderful sights, including flower markets, bazaars, art galleries and museums.
• It’s easy to be drawn into the magic of open-air night markets full of vendors selling food, souvenirs and handicrafts.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Chiang Mai isn’t just the largest city in northern Thailand, it’s also the most culturally significant, with a rich history that dates back to its founding in the late 1300s. Surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, it stood in relative isolation until the last century, which has helped maintain its distinctive charm. The city’s famous old town district offers an authentic taste of provincial Thailand, but the city also has a cosmopolitan air that isn’t forced. A balance of old and new, the city is known for its numerous, elaborately designed ancient temples, bustling street markets and a warm hospitality reminiscent of its Lanna Heritage. And while Thai cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world, the traditional Khantoke dinner is an exciting experience unique to the region.
